Influential Person #5: Megan Berkheiser

A few weeks ago, Ms. Berkheiser, a professor in the Illustration department came to demo collaging to the Fashion Illustration club. She kept going on and on about how lovely Eckburg was, how high the ceilings were, the sketches in the hallways, when really she would introduce me to how beautiful illustration was. There are a lot of majors here and sometimes I'm a little terrible a differentiating them--> Illustration vs. Drawing vs. Painting. But in reality they really are so so different. She mentioned how much "style" fashion students seem to bring to Morris and like any New York-came-from she talked about how wonderful the city is and encouraged us to get a way in. So why is she so inspiring? She painted yes. But she wanted something more and knew she wanted something more. Sometimes I think we don't let that nagging feeling get to us enough. But she did, and after a terrible life episode she decided to approach many different editorials and show them what she does. You know how in magazines, etc they may have an image either before or somewhere in an article often whimsically going a long with what is being written about. ..sorry if i'm not making much sense. But that is exactly what she does. These "images" are actually crafted set ups composed of perhaps dolls and printed faces and wallpaper and all kinds of things and make up such incredible work.
This image belongs to Megan Berkheiser!! (linked to website, she spoke about copyright..haha)
I was so honored to met her.. She's worked with TIME magazine and other drop your mouth, very serious places. But what is so special about her is her decision that she can be a teacher and still be an editor. Sure she can't take up as many projects as she used to, but she won't put her heart on hold. She said something so, so important to us: no matter how wrapped up in your work you are take the time to breathe every once in a while, to take a walk. All she wanted in college was to be the best, to work harder than reasonable, and never sleep, and now she looks back at it, and wish she melted a little more into it. I felt a lot like she was a lot like me. Sometimes I'm starting to wonder how much I am missing out. I feel like every moment is crucial and I must work every second because I am not satisfied now and want an amazing life in the future and to me the only way to get to that is to work work work never sleep never sleep never sleep. And I am doing it all right. But I'm not so sure I am happy. Megan, it seemed a lot like you can do anything. And believed you can do anything. And so terribly seemed to think we, me, I can do anything. I sure hope so.

I absolutely adored her portfolio by the way. SHE WAS SO PROFESSIONAL. everything matched! and she told me I could find nice cheaper ones on DickBlick, exactly where I get all my art supplies! She was so wonderful, I can't get over it. She even gave me some paper she used to make leaves out of painted tracing paper. Amazing. Your paper is treasured Megan, and so are you.

Please visit Megan's website and view all her beautiful work at Pushart.com

I am so happy to have met you. Thank you, thank you, thankyou.

It's that time of the quarter again.

The end slash the beginning. So for any other savvy, stardom hopeful it's also that time to whip another portfolio together.  I am SO GLAD, I did not post last night. You guys would have really not liked me. haha. ...I was so disappointed in the ending. Quarter endings are always melancholy no matter how hopeful for me anyway. But I couldn't believe the quality of my classes work.. Like for the first time I really think I may have felt insulted. The class before us was so good! I kind of do understand why Lara picks on us so much. It's hard to see serious effort. I feel like my work could grow so much better if I was a little more intimidated or in a heightened learning environment. I'm not great or anything! Just the opposite! I feel like I could have potentially done better. And now it's a mystery what those croquis could have been like. But here's a final girl, and I truly am so happy about them!! But could you imagine them sexier?
Sorry I've been pausing. There's still so so so so so so so so so much to post about... arg.
Two many thoughts.
I really wish I had  some money so I can buy groceries...
haha
Guess I am fasting?

much lurrrrv. <3

Things I would buy if I had money

Soap.
fabric softener.
groceries.
anti-wrinkle cream.
You.

I have so many dreams.

And I would die over and over and over again for fashion, Carlos. Over and over and over again.

Influential person #4: Pablo Neruda

The incredible, incredible Pablo Neruda. Someone who knows a lot about love. And about beautiful clauses.

Puedo Escribir
I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.

Write, for instance: "The night is full of stars,
and the stars, blue, shiver in the distance."

The night wind whirls in the sky and sings.

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.
I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

On nights like this, I held her in my arms.
I kissed her so many times under the infinite sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her.
How could I not have loved her large, still eyes?

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.
To think I don't have her. To feel that I've lost her.

To hear the immense night, more immense without her.
And the poem falls to the soul as dew to grass.

What does it matter that my love couldn't keep her.
The night is full of stars and she is not with me.

That's all. Far away, someone sings. Far away.
My soul is lost without her.

As if to bring her near, my eyes search for her.
My heart searches for her and she is not with me.

The same night that whitens the same trees.
We, we who were, we are the same no longer.

I no longer love her, true, but how much I loved her.
My voice searched the wind to touch her ear.

Someone else's. She will be someone else's. As she once
belonged to my kisses.
Her voice, her light body. Her infinite eyes.

I no longer love her, true, but perhaps I love her.
Love is so short and oblivion so long.

Because on nights like this I held her in my arms,
my soul is lost without her.

Although this may be the last pain she causes me,
and this may be the last poem I write for her.

Morning

I can't believe I am saying this, but I absolutely love fashion sketching. -And I am so glad I feel this way. I was so afraid! and I got such bad grades! -But all of that pushing made it so much better and I'm so glad I get to share a little with you. Sorry if it's not too interesting. Here are some images of the classrooms, model drawing room, etc -places where all nighters happen. It's probably a good thing eckburg isn't actually 24/7 all of the time, because I am afraid I wouldn't be able to leave. Next quarter. It's all eckburg, and i'm so excited and so nervous and have no idea how I will survive. But do any of us know this? Probably not.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up to much lately. If I had my way I would blog every day, multiple times a day. I like reflecting, journaling. I walk around with SO many blog post ideas in my head, so until I post one I kind of back it up a little, -and I had these pictures.
It's always night time these days. You wake up, you live during the day, and work during the night and the cycle continues and continues. It's like Gotham city. Hopefully I'll get into a better cycle of things. I've been sleeping a lot better this quarter. Now I tend to make sure I sleep a little so I can work the next day. Last time I lit-ter-al-ly could not go to sleep. But now I worry if I purposefully leave the night time as an opportunity to do work. I'm participating in an awesome contest by the way with Unicef and an amazing company called Orta Blu. I've started a post about that to but never published it. We submit our work on the 11th. Pray for me! haha! I'm sooo serious. It may sound silly, and maybe a little backwards and strange and overly religious, but I really feel this quarter has really given me a chance to be closer to God and maybe even more spiritual, if you like to call it that. Sometimes I really couldn't even make church last quarter sometimes because I was soo tied up. But now I generally make sure to go, and if I sleep to late, there is always a mass at the cathedral at 1 and can run into the beautiful John and Karen there.
Really though, being here, and doing all this fashion has in an odd way brought me closer to death over and over. And it sounds like I am exaggerating, but you are literally put in these ridiculous situations and have to find a miracle in order to succeed. And I think in surviving we all succeed. Everyone here is so talented, it's so ridiculous.Thank you for all of your inspiration.

I love Lara. I love all my fashion professors. SO HONORED YOU'RE MY TEACHER!
I'd say there's been quite a bit of progress. quite a bit my friends. nothing I love more than a chop stick girl I guess. ;) Let's let this be a lesson that you-can-do-whatever-you-put-your-mind-to. I had never drawn anything in my life! We hear it a billion times, but I practiced so so hard. Because I don't want to ever think I can't draw well anymore. I think that holds me back a lot. I have this mentality that I'm not a very good drawer and that's ok but actually I don't want it to be ok. I want to show my best effort. Thank you for giving me those Cs and Ds Lara. I have no idea what grade I have in your class, but you have taught me so much. ..If you see this I for one am blushing.
Well good night space cadets. I was nice posting again. I have so much on my mind but I shouldn't bore you any further. Wish me luck and fortune in school and I will show you some sketches for the uniform contest just for updates sake! Love you bye <3

Once again

Dear Mr. Gilks,
....I've tried writing a follow up a few times now. But nothing seems right. I don't want to bother you... but I don't want it to seem as though I am not interested either.  There is absolutely no reason why you should hand me everything, which is why there is every reason for this to be a fight to a beautiful finish.
Please await my email. Please respond. Hopefully my blog posts aren't linked to my google account. That would be iffy.
Sincerly,
Michel

MUST I further explain why?
Blair goes after exactly what she wants and knows exactly who to use and how to get them. Clev-er. So so smart, whitty, and always dressed immaculately I think Ms. Waldorf is absolutely remarkable. A big inner part of me wants to be exactly like her and there are other parts that are. Her heart cannot be fully opened until her "bigger dreams" are met and accepts all sacrifice. Thank you Leighton for making Blair a reality. I love you both. xoxo
