Inspiration Post #12

Hopefully all your actions receive a reaction, in some positive way.
-And everything is of some significance.
It's been a pretty tough time lately, not school related, but future related and I've had so many moments of feeling down about it and was pretty sure I shouldn't blog about those feelings. But really I want to encourage, but I also don't want to hide from you. So if there's anything that's seemingly out of your control, or you wish things could be different don't worry they can be. It sounds cliche and kind of silly, but if you push hard enough, give hard enough, work all to tears enough, something has to be happening. Because surely we don't live in a world were a heart can't take you far -when a heart is what's brought me here. So as always I encourage you to venture, to discover the world, fall in love with the planet, and in love with yourself. Within reason of course :) Live well

"My imagination sees you
Like a painting by Van Gogh
Starry nights and bright sunflowers
Follow you where you may go

Oh, I've loved you from the start
In every single way
And more each passing day"

The good thing about having a crush is knowing you're alive. Knowing you can still feel things. The bad thing is, knowing nothing will ever happen.

Sowing

9:28 PM Michael 0 Comments

The empty pot is one of my favorite stories from when I was more of a little boy. No matter how hard Young Ping tries to water the flower seed the emperor gave him it does not seem to bloom. Everyone grows the most beautiful blossoms and run to show them to the emperor with pride. Ashamed his flower did not grow, his father encourages him to show the emperor anyway because he knows he did his best. After the emperor asks Ping why his pot is bare and Ping tries to explain he did his hardest, the emperor smiles knowing that the boiled seeds would never be able to grow and makes Ping his heir because of his integrity. Although the story is about honesty being the best policy, also sometimes, at least I hope that, just because the seeds we are sowing don't seem to be blossoming, doesn't mean they aren't and won't be more magnificent than our wildest dreams.

Welcome to finals, ...I mean Midterms.

10:07 PM Michael 0 Comments

I hope all you bumblebees have gathered up your Easter eggs because we are saying hola at that time of the quarter again; when every nighter is an all nigher. ...Not that it wasn't that way already. I've thought about doing this post for a while, but every time we end up getting much too far into the week and perhaps even a grave somewhere. Sorry in advance if I take a siesta from it all! I will post again at the end of the tunnel. SO here are a few of my favorite half term solutions:

For your all nighter:
1- Orange Juice

I don't particularly drink a lot of coffee -I tend to get ridiculously buzzed. So my alternative is orange juice and oranges. It might sound crazy because they're fruit and cute and sweet and probably don't have caffeine in them (I don't know this for sure..) but orange juice can keep me up all night. That and regular water with lemon juice in it. Make sure to drink a lot at night. Eating is easy, but eating can also make me feel lazy if I have to much. I tend to snack though when I have school work...so I am always at Kroger getting crackers. Homework makes me hungry. Oranges are also a good source of beta carotene, calcium, folic acid, magnesium, potassium, and thiamin so you can develop well and stay up all night.

for your long life:
2-Vitamin C Tablets
Also found in Oranges are vitamin C. I'm pretty guilty of not buying very much fruit, it's so expensive and disappears so quickly... but buyyy it! :) As an alternative I take Vitamin C tablets to avoid at all costs getting sick. It's so hard if you miss a class :( I know you are only supposed to take one a day but sometimes I popp in 2 at a time just to be safe. That and a multivitamin to make sure I am somewhat on the right nutrition track.

for your eyes:
3- Rotho Eye Drops

Naturally when you are tired your eyes hurt, so if you ease them you may feel a little revived. It's fairly temporary but they help me get through a few good hours. These are my favorite eye drops! Michelle Phan uses them in her "Lady Gaga Bad Romance" Tutorial as well as a few others. They literally make you eyes so much whiter, brighter, and temporarily dilated. They also help me relieve headaches without Tylenol. I use the green one, which is the mildest and there are two or three levels up. Check them out they sell at many different drug stores.

for your sanity:
4- make a list
Lists are my number one "destressor". I may still be stressed out after I am finished making one but sometimes I get so stressed out I have no idea what I am even stressed out about. Making a list helps put it all out in front of you and from there you can arrange, prioritize and goal set. This intertwines with planning ahead and time management. Take some control of your situation. Lists aren't silly!

for your soul:
5- take a shower
Actually taking showers are probably my number one destressor. I look forward to them sometimes haha. If your not ready to completely plunge in, I've been known to recommend washing your feet. I don't know what it is but clean feet just make you feel so fresh, renewed, ready and best of all, happy.

for yourself:
6-a moment of nothing

It's one of the hardest things in the world to stop what you are doing and do nothing. It feels like time will slip away from you. But sometimes this attitude doesn't place you at your top and whether you need it or not ...you do need a break. "Taking a break" helps inspire and gives the project you return to a new vantage point.  I want to call this section meditation. But almost not as active as meditation. I mean literally taking a moment outside of the earth, outside of yourself and being a spirit - because you are one. Sometimes when I feel so stressed I look up at the sky, watch the stars, watch the sun, watch the eclipses and if you give the universe a chance, it can impress you. Everything is still moving. The deadline will come and pass, but this world will keep going and going and going. And squirrels and pigeons will keep having children and populating the earth. So realize that all though your homework is the most important thing in the world, you are decently important yourself. I learned this suggestion from Sachi during her student leadership lecture and it's funny because it's so true. We never want to stop working. Don't kill yourself you guys! You're projects will turn out great. Work hard and I'll see you and your eye dropped, concealer coated eyes on the other side!

Good Morning Eckburg

Just being yourself

A few nights ago, I ran into my dear new friend Mark at the computer lab. I saw he had an article of himself in the New York Times as his profile picture. CRAZY right? Like THE newspapers out of all newspapers. So curious of course, I asked him how that happened. Hopefully I'm getting the story right but an Advertising agency was hosting a twitter contest where you were to explain why / what you could do to help them via 13 tweets. Practically it's like tweeting a cover letter. So while everyone else is using really big, i-want-this-job-i-am-super-smart-higher-me words that I myself am guilty of employing like "super optimize", "capacity", "efficiency", all very hard to be in your natural vocabulary type words, Mark decides to take a different approach and talk like he normally does-in his words like a typical goof ball. So funnily enough he gets an interview or more like 4 of them, via skype, with people like not only HR, but the creative director, and like the CEO and chair. caray caray! Anyway, he aces it like a natural and finds out that there is going to be an article on all that's going on and so he thinks its like a town newspaper article, something cute and small. Histerically during his interview he answers questions like"why would you like to be an art director?" with responses like "because then he can kick back at 4 oclock in the morning and have a glass of wine" (Sorry if I got that quote wrong!) He gets an email from a lady who tells him to please respond to her via telephone and not email. So he calls her and explains they'd like to publish an article in the New York Times. So by now he thinks it'll still be a small thing via internet. When viewing the article on the website, he finds "also in the print edition". SO CRAZY. But that is not the end of the story my friends. Because of the way media works, that story trickled down to like 30 other publications. When going to the Career Fair a few weeks ago people KNEW WHO HE WAS AND HAD ALREADY SECURED JOB POSITIONS FOR HIM. Mark is also now apart of a certain insider team at scad AND ladies and gentlemen, got an email from THE Paula Wallace congratulating him. WHAT AN AMAZING STORY. The ENTIRE time he was talking to me my mouth was embarrassingly agape. I am SO proud of him. Sorry I'm telling everyone about this Mark... I just can't help but brag. He is a Junior and this all happened THIS quarter just because he was himself. Such an amazing guy. So inspiring, and I am just so honored he took the time to talk to me and even gave me some new cover letter and resume pointers. And so so kindly told me it was okay to keep getting denied internships, to keep trying and maybe they'll remember your efforts. And he told me this without me explaining my situation.

Aim to be yourself you guys! Your decent self of course. But if we offer so many copies, so many overly embellished cover letters that sound nothing like you, well you are marketing the wrong person. You want this to be an honest transaction so that it is a right fit and you are happy! But this of course goes outside of working examples. Friends, relationships all of that are much stronger when you are comfortable with each other and not faking. If you are making a pretend self it becomes too, too much work. I hope good things happen for all of you! Continue to live well.

Congratulations Mark, I am so, so, so, so, so, so, so impressed. Sorry again for bragging about you in front of the internet!

Let's just say a little birdie told you guys. tweet tweet!

Could you please repeat the word?

"Mood of Atlanta"

12:02 AM Michael 0 Comments

Last weekend, Sachi's apparel class had planned a field trip to go fabric shopping in Atlanta and Leah and Mieko so darlingly invited me to come along. Crazy because I was sitting in class the other day picturing all the fabrics in Joanns and wondering where I was going to get fabric to make the final project dress. So it all worked out so well and Ally Kitty was around so she showed us around SCAD Atlanta! So cool! I really liked being in Atlanta. I'd say the building is "more modern" compared to the general feel in Sav. It's literally like one big colored Montgomery Hall. It was so nice seeing tall buildings again! :) I didn't actually get any fabric because I was so overwhelmed but I took a few samples of ones that I liked and can order that way. Good luck with all of your projects!! <3
